Hamburg Transit
S-Bahn

S-Bahn

The Hamburg S-Bahn system operates on the surface as well as in subways thru town. It utilizes a unique third rail system. The third rail shoes contact the sides of the power third rail. The S-Bahn frequency rivals some metros on the downtown portions of the system. The S-Bahn also has one non-electrified line (S4).

The Hamburg S-Bahn is in the middle of modernizing its equipment. Cars dating from the 1950/60's are being retired. Very modern cars with an attractive paint scheme are replacing them.
