Japanese Mainline Railroads -> Shinkansen
Joetsu Line

The Joetsu line has a lot of tunnels going through the mountains from Tokyo to Niigata at the Sea of Japan. It is a relatively short line lasting about 2 hours from end to end. It was the first Shinkansen line that had to deal with snow of significant amounts. It is a very popular line during the height of ski season.

If you like Japanese railroading consider joining the Japanese Railway Society.

A 200 series Shinkansen at Nagaoka Station in the Niigata Prefecture. It is inbound to Tokyo, about 1.5~2 hours away on the Joetsu Line..

A MAX series double-decker Shinkansen is entering Nagaoka. MAX stands for Multiple Amenities Express.
