San Francisco Transit
BART Rail system

San Francisco

BART is a major link for the Bay Area. It proved its worth during the big earthquake several years ago.

There is debate if BART is a true metro, as I have classified it. It is probably closer to what Germans would call an S-Bahn. S-Bahn's have higher frequency than commuter trains, and often they use mid-city tunnels. This is very close to what BART is. It is a regional rail system serving many cities around the Bay.

The extension to San Francisco Airport is now open, and construction for the Warm Springs extension should start soon. BART uses stored value printed tickets for fare collection.
