The streetcar system in Philadelphia is a shadow of its former
greatness. The only lines that operate regularly are the Subway-Surface
routes that serve West Philadelphia and use the Market St. Subway to serve
downtown. Two former traditional streetcar routes are considered
"temporarily" suspended, and have been for over a decade.
Finally, one streetcar line has been
restored, the 15- Girard Ave. Line. It's
tracks has
been upgraded and fully rebuilt PCC's from Brookville are operating on
the line.
Portions of Route 23
through central city see very sporadic service with PCC's, but this
is a rare occasion, usually around Christmas. Maybe someday Philly will
restore the 23, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
