Hakone Ropeway

The Hakone ropeway is actually two separate ropeway, or cable car systems. The newer system goes from Sounzan (connection with the Hakone Cablecar or incline) to Owakudani. It uses large cars hung from two cables. Remains of the older system is replace can be seen on the ground. At Owakudani you transfer to the older class ropeway. It utilizes much smaller cars the roll on the upper cable and are pulled by a second cable. This line goes from Owakudani to Togendai with one intermediate stop at Ubaku. At Togendai you transfer to a "pirate" boat to sail across Lake Ashi to Hakone.
